An allergy is the body’s response to a substance that the immune system recognizes as harmful. For some, this sensitivity may be a seasonal issue, such as when plants release pollen that fills the air. For others, a more ongoing sensitivity may be at play, such as that of pet dander or dust. The body’s immune system reacts by dispensing an antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE). This process manifests itself as an allergic reaction, the symptoms of which often include:
- Sneezing
- Watery, itchy eyes
- Runny nose
- Scratchy throat
